Name was updated : What does this case status mean?

“Name was updated”. Over the last few days, many of my friends received this USCIS case status. This year’s H1-B visa approval still seems far away, further augmented by slow case status change and ambiguous case status naming convention.  Therefore, I wanted to give you an idea of the possible USCIS case statuses and their meaning.  Wondering what happens if your H1B is pending after oct 1 cap gap click here.

List of USCIS Case Status.

Name was updated

H1B Status 1 : ‘Case Was Received and A Receipt Notice Was Emailed’

If your H1-B petition got upgraded to premium processing, USCIS emails receipt notices to avoid delay. This status implies the case being picked in the lottery and under premium processing.

H1B Status 2: ‘Case Was Received’

This status implies the case being picked in the lottery and under regular processing.  USCIS uses postal service to notify you. In addition, it takes 2-7 days to receive the status letter.

H1B Case Status 3:  ‘Request for Additional Evidence Notice mailed’

The above status implies that in order to process your H1-B petition,  USCIS needs more information to make a decision. As a result, USCIS responds with an RFE (Request for Evidence). The employer gets an RFE notice indicating what documents USCIS needs to further process the case. Every RFE has an expiring date before which the employer needs to respond. Moreover, failure to respond results in H1-B denial.

H1B Case Status 4 – Response to USCIS’ Request for Evidence Received

This status implies USCIS received the response from your employer. USCIS starts processing the case  again and use the documents to give a decision. The status also tells the petitioner  they can expect a decision/ update on this case soon.

H1B Case Status 5 – ‘Case Approved And Decision Emailed’:

This case status implies that the H1B petition is approved under premium processing. Congrats!

H1B  Status 6 – ‘Case Approved’

The above case status implies that the H1B petition got approved. USCIS sends the receipt notice to the employer using traditional post. This case status appears only for petitions filed under regular processing.

H1B Status  7 – ” Decision Notice  Mailed”

Sorry! Not every H1B Application gets approved.  USCIS issues an RFE and then reviews the evidence before making a decision. However, if  your employer cannot convince USCIS with your petition’s supporting documents, USCIS denies the petition and the case status reads as ” Decision Notice Mailed”.

H1B Status  8– Error : The application Receipt Number is invalid

If you do not enter a valid 13 character string, USCIS case status website gives you the above error message saying that the application receipt number is invalid. It means you entered your petition number incorrectly. Or your employer provided you the wrong petition number.

H1B Status 9: Name was Updated

One of the most confusing statuses that USCIS online system gives. All this status means is USCIS reopened your file and you can expect a status update within few weeks.  It may be genuine that the name gets updated due to a clerical error. However, this may not always be the case. There is a perception among users that this status leads to rejection or second RFE. This is not true. In most cases, I hear friends say they either got an approval or an EAD card. Hope it is good news for you. But there are instances of issuing second RFE or a rejection.

H1B Case Status : Fee Refunded

This status means your employer/attorney filed extra fees not required by USCIS and USCIS sends a refund check back.

Wish to know how immigration can grant approval to secondary receipients and ignore primary recipient of an immigration benefit..ie out of a citizen marrying a foreign spouse who has two teenagers ends up leaving the spouse i. Limbo..case not assigned for any action while that of the spouse children get approved.get greencards, become citizens and no change of status for the primary beneficiary, the spouse inthis matter..

  2. I had my i-140 filled and status was updated online as “Name was updated” and the same day actually the 140 was approved , week later when attorney received docs, there I found this.

  3. My status still says “Name was updated on 25th October.” It’s been more than a month and there is no change is status. I had received RFE in July and had replied by Oct first week.
